My last cast of the season with the big rod. Conditions looked perfect: a good height and good clarity. Unfortunately, there was no sign of any salmon.

A difficult day on a lovely beat. We just couldn’t locate the grayling despite deploying a variety of tactics. The occasional OOS trout and a couple of small parr at least put a slight bend in our rods !

With an air temp of 21 degrees, bright and sunny, I wasn’t expecting much action today.Very quiet with no sign of salmon or grayling.

The river had risen 40 odd cm overnight and was very coloured. Barely fishable but gave it a go with big heavy tube for a few hours. Nothing seen.

Nice to be back on my favourite beat of the Wye for one final thrash. Had come to the beat the previous day to retrieve a lost net that one kind member has stashed in the hut for me ( many thanks). River had gone up overnight and had peaked 1.45 on Erwood guage and at first wasn’t sure if I was going to fish as quite swollen and coloured. Nevertheless I persevered though wading tentative as had left my flotation device at home, but was pleased I had wading stick with me. No salmon touched or seen but a lovely autumn day to be on the water.

The river looked in wonderful condition on a lovely warm October day. No sign of any salmon!
