1ft 3"...perfect for the lower half of the beat. Salmon showed in the 3 best taking lies, but were not reading the script.... this is story of my season on the Wye this year

Low water and no fish. However, enjoyable day and very well looked after by Jonathan who persuaded me to invest in further tackle and hence visit to sport fish following. Has he shares in business?? Great to be fishing close to home and will be back very shortly.

Blazing hot day, the beat looking stunning. Chunky coloured fish leaping rolling in the Rectory Pool a few times, covered it and changed flies 3 times, could not tempt it. More exploring today checking out the RHB too, puts a whole new perspective on it. Until the next time.

My first time on The Rectory beat and following all the water last week my hopes were high. Gauge was at 1'2" with good clarity. Quite breezy at times. Alas it was not to be. Fished Island, Rock, Tail, Bridge, Mill, Rectory neck with not even a fish showing. Went back to Rock at 7.30pm to see if an evening session might change things. Unfortunately not although a big fish, twenty pounds ?, jumped about 10 yards from me as I worked down the tail. Salmon fishing huh? On to Penpont now to hopefully have more success.

I caught 15 trout , mainly around the 10oz size but with one at 1lb and one at 2lb. There were 2 grayling, one to 1lb. One lovely salmon parr. All returned all caught with a copper brass headed nymph. Saw 2 salmon each leaped twice. A good day.

A very good day was had all in all. DH had a bumper occasion with 18 fish to 2lb. I fished for salmon all day but only managed 4 trout to 1lb. The day to be here was Tuesday when the water was perfect. Sadly some of us have to work! The wind was our biggest problem today being gusty and coming from every direction.

Very little sign of life at The Rock.

River in really good nick at 1ft 6" and 4ft vis. Started at 5am and fished till 8.30am, covering all the likely places. Fish showing in all the pools I fished except the Run, but sadly only a couple of shad and 1 decent brownie wanted my fly. A large fish (25+) showed twice in the tail of the Rock pool.

A red letter day to remember! Having fished Gromain on Sunday with poor water clarity for most of the day and no fish to the net, my brother Phil and I were full of anticipation at the prospect of hitting Rectory at a perfect water height and clarity with the gauge at 1'10" and slowly falling. We were not to be disappointed with the best mornings fishing we have had.

The Rock Pool was the obvious choice and starting at 7am within a few minutes and his first proper cast my brother Phil was into his first fish at top of Rock 11lb Hen fresh run sea liced on JC cascade size 8. Within 30 mins I was into my first fish again in top of Rock 12lb Hen fresh run sea liced on JC cascade size 8.

At 10am Phil was into his second fish from tail of Rock 12lb Hen bar of silver sea liced on JC cascade size 8.
At 10-30am I was into my second from tail of Rock 15lb cock slightly coloured but still carrying sea lice again on same fly.
At 11 am and again in tail of Rock I was into my third 12lb cock again carrying lice.

We then took a break after fishing down through Bridge pool and after lunch started again at Island run and top of rock and at 1pm I landed a 15lb bar of silver hen again liced.

1-40pm Phil had his third from top of rock a 16lb cock slightly coloured but again carrying lice.

That was seven between us and all were very powerful fish and when returned went off in a flash taking no time at all to recover which is great to see. We then had a fish back through Bridge seeing 3 fish jump but all tight to the far bank and then across to Gravel Catch where we saw more fish but didn't connect. Heading back to the car we couldn't resist one more quick go through Island and rock where we both hooked and lost another fish each after much cart wheeling about the pool.

Definitely a day to remember and nice to see a plan come together after much studying of forecasts and of where fish may have been and where they would run to given the water.

Cheers Andrew & Phil Kerwin
