Very quiet session in the morning, perhaps caused by the stained water after the recent rainfall. We did find a few trout and decent sized grayling in good numbers, in the afternoon. Mainly caught on peeping caddis and beaded nymph patterns.

A bit too low at 1’2 for salmon prospecting but I gave it a go putting a fly through all of the beat below the hut.Nothing seen though.
There were plenty of grayling in Gromain’s pools today, and the trout were looking up as well. Trout to 11” but some bigger grayling with only a few juvenile fish. Caught on the usual spider and weighted nymph patterns . Some tight line nymphing with a pair of perdigons took most of the bigger fish.
All quickly returned.

Lovely height, no wind and warm.
The "Rectory Ghost" pulled a fish in the tail of the spring pool on a Bann Shrimp.
Returned later in the evening and it ignored a bann, a cascade and a francis but came to a 3" sunray with a boil....but no connection. Despite waiting and trying other sizes of sunray he couldn't move it again.
It will still be there until a rise!
Few trout showing but non stuck on.
Nice evening.

A beautiful beat. Water height and colour good. Sunshine and cloudy spells. Unfortunately no takes or fish seen.
Note to anglers on this stretch to heed the WUF wading warning and also check their wading boot studs as the bedrock is like ice.

Amazing conditions, 1'8" and dropping, fair bit of colour but not too much, just felt like it would happen today. And it did....
Hooked an absolutely magnificent fish in the Orchard, it cleared the water twice, running to the far back and then ran right back to me and sat only 15 yards and and 10 yard down. Banging it's head hard and shook the hook loose. Clever fish.
I had that horrible feeling the hook set was not good, and it was indeed sadly the case. The take was so violent and unexpected I'm not sure how else it could have been played, but currently well in the beat-yourself-up phase!
Absolutely heartbreaking outcome for any Salmon fisher. As it all goes slack and so quiet you instantly know this will be a part of you forever. Got a good look at it twice: Deep fish way into the 20s and quite fresh too.
A nightmare in paradise!
