Super frustrating day of fishing - didn't catch anything two days ago, nothing today either. Tried everything in the book - I guess the fish just weren't that hungry this week.
The really little ones were interested in the maggots, and I caught one of 'm. But that was about it.
River was rather low, water was clear.
Fishing Passport Note : This beat has dispensation for the use of maggots during this period.

My first visit to Wyastone Leys. Access was as described on the Angling Dreams YouTube video. Some steep banks of course, but it's the Wye, not a Commercial fishery so to be expected.
Conditions were hot and bright and the river was running low and clear. Not ideal.
Boat traffic was okay, maybe 10 on the morning I fished, and all were polite and considerate - none of us are going anywhere so we may as well try and get along and unite for the good of the river!
I don't own waders or have the confidence to wade on an unknown river on my own so trotting a float wasn't the easiest but I gave it a go, no bites but I think having maggots would have helped with that. I think this fishery is ideal for wading/trotting.
Fishing a groundbait feeder further along the English end of the stretch which seemed deeper was where I felt most comfortable, so stuck at it. Probably not ideal conditions for a static bait, but hey ho.
Caught a decent, hard fighting eel first cast, approx two and a half pounds.
Then my travel Barbel rod broke unexpectedly whilst testing the clutch, never had that in 40yrs angling! Luckily I had a sturdy telescopic rod in the car so ran back for that.
At lunchtime the rod hooped over and what I assumed was a Barbel made it's way further into England, stripping line from the reel as it went upstream, what a fight!
I rested the fish for a good 10 minutes before quickly weighing, resting again, and returning my best barbel ever (I've only caught 4) at 7lb11oz. Fish had some old scars and it seemed to be blind in one eye but was still beautiful and fighting fit. Delighted!
A great days fishing in beautiful surroundings, thank you.

Not a touch, rolled meat for 3 hrs, then far bank gulley on feeder and pellet until 4pm. Didn’t see a fish roll. Very quiet. But lovely scenery.
