This time I came prepared with a new 7 Foot #3 brook rod which was perfect for this beat and threw a #2 line with a furled leader just fine in the shelter of the stream banks. First go at this beat which has both upland type pools and more sedate pasture land sections. There was a steady hatch of Dancia but not much else from 1pm until 4pm which got the odd fish rising. Most fish took a size 14 para adams and were all in great condition with very fat, full of Mayfly bellies. The best fish was just over 13".

My first venture on the wild streams; what a day. Weather conditions were just perfect and there was a decent hatch of mayfly and brook dunns. Nothing rising in the morning so stuck with a nymph until lunchtime, taking 10 trout up to 12". At one point I took 3 in 4 casts. Fish started to rise after lunch; they weren't interested in the mayfly but 4 more trout to 12" succumbed to an adams. A big thankyou to WUF and a huge thumbs up to my guide Frank Williams whose knowledge and advice was invaluable.

River full and fast flowing following recent rain, but lovely and clear. Sun and cloud and a few gusts of wind. Wading quite tricky in places and I nearly fell in a couple of times. Clouds of midges. Some mayfly and gnats.
A few trout rising in the pools and ripples. Caught 3 small 6-8in trout one on a pheasant tail dry. Switched to an Adams and that brought the fish up and then caught the biggest wild brown I've ever caught on a river. A fabulous fish of about 2.5 pounds. Most unexpected on this small river.
All the fish were returned unharmed. Another fantastic WUF beat!!And a gorgeous setting.

A few fish risen by my friend who was late arriving. Tricky conditions but a beautiful place to fish.

First fish was best of the two day trip - about 12 inches.
Other was about 5 inches, much the same as yesterday on the Monnow. Water level was inevitably fairly low.
We tried to access the water by the bridge on the road to Longtown as the red marking on the supplied map clearly shows availability to the road there. The gate is padlocked and the gentleman at the house opposite politely told us the beat did not start there and we were to access it through the gate by the parking layby. We later saw that the gardens of property down to the bank anyway rendering that access impossible?
We did that and reached the water and enjoyed some lovely glides and the odd pool working upstream. For first time visitors some indication of just where the no fishing stretch begins is badly needed - I was wading the water and really had no idea but just guessed.
Best fishing was without doubt just above the weir.
Two very happy days - yesterday on the Lower Longtown beat and today. Thank you for making it available.
