I figured this morning that an early session may be beneficial with the monsoon downpours imminent , so opted for the Whittern beat , parked up at six , by the corn field, and bimbled down to the Hunton bridge , looking a bit murky with yesterday's rain, initially fishing tungsten nymphs, with success in the first few pools , feisty Arrow fish always give a good account of themselves.

Had some fun on those two glides between the bridges ,on dries , small eighteen f fly getting hammered and some really nice confident takes too it ,great fun !!!!

Perhaps it was the weather , but the trout were very savage on the dries this morning, also fished a Parachute Greenwells , lovely splashy rises to it in the faster water too !!

Only fished this morning perhaps couple of hundred yards up passed the Titley Bridge , superb fun and a hectic four hours sport , with fifteen to the net , ranging in size from six to twelve inches ,lovely job , and a few lost on the barbless hooks . . .

Seems an age since i fished the Whittern beat , forgotten how varied and fun it was , its up there with the Kington beat and Edw Cregrina as one of my favourites, spot on !!! Back here again next week , some much needed rain due in later today , happy days!!!!!

The half inch of rain on Friday evening hasn't made a lot of difference with the water level still very low. Humid overcast conditions,a few small olives hatching in the morning and a few Mayfly around lunch time. Fished Tenkara and size 12 killer kebari. 6 trout 8 to 12 inches.

Lovely stretch for wild browns, good fly hatch, very windy and showers. upper section of the beat full of fallen trees, creating some intersting casting challenges and deep pools

Very hot day. Plenty of fly life but little movement. My son caught a 12" trout on a mayfly.

Fished in evening for a couple of hours to mitigate against brightness, heat and low water. All taken on dries beneath deep tree cover. Costly on flies but rewarded with 5 fish all on medium olives. Fishing tailed off once the rather more expert Mr Otter turned up. A remarkable sight.

Very bright, hot, and the river was low. There were mayfly about, and some trout rising, but they were very choosy and with the conditions, seemed unwilling to eat an artificial fly. The upper part of to beat in the wood is hard going in places, where a machete, if not a chainsaw would be handy! A very pretty stretch of water with some challenging fishing. Given the conditions, I should have stayed until dusk when there might have been more activity.

Perfect conditions today, hardly any wind and mostly overcast. A steady Mayfly hatch all through the day and plenty of other insects hatching as well but few fish rising. Fortunately the ones that did rise were eager to take my fly and I managed to get 10 to the net. Most were good fish in the 10 - 12" range but a few smaller ones as well, all safely returned. All on either a small size 16 DHE variant or sort of Adams.

A lovely beat. A fine day with strong winds. Lots of insect life and mayfly hatches throughout the day. I caught one 8" trout on a mayfly imitation and my son caught a 12" trout in the bridge pool on a Hares Ear type nymph.

After (what seems) like weeks of hot dry weather today was overcast, and there was one hell of a wind, which made casting almost impossible in many places. Had to go with the nymph/Klinkhammer combo, just to be able to get anywhere. A beautiful spot, but the river was low, with only a few really fishable areas. The evidence of the winter we have just had was clear to see. Plenty of big trees down and big exposed gravel banks. I was hoping to fish until dusk, but the wind made me change my plans. Fished from 10.30-6'ish. Five beautiful WBT, one about 6", the rest in the 8-10" region.

5 x trout 6-10 inches, Monnow Gosling. The day was hot and the river very low and clear, but this beat was strangely quiet. Very few fish rising although the odd mayfly was about.+
