A bitterly cold wind through the trees today, predictably causing the fish to not play ball until the middle of the day. Usual Duo method would only produce one fish per pool. Always felt as if you had to try and force a take rather than get one.

ANGLERS NOTE: Since the winter floods the stream has changed dramatically and areas that used to be shallow gravels are deep holes in places, take extra care when wading!

6 x trout 6-9 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. A cold morning with more rain supposedly on the way. This woodland beat has been beaten about with storm damage lately with some new trees down. Will see what we can make of it this winter.

On arrival mid morning the brook had a tinge of colour to it and a bit of water running through which is just how I like this beat to be. I fished the duo all morning and had fish from nearly every pool I came to, including a surprise roach!

By mid afternoon a few lightning strikes in the forest alarming close by (one spooked a load of deer which came running on through) meant that I called it a day and walked back to the car. It was a good call as ten minutes later the brook resembled a flash flood. A real sight to behold but a humbling one at that.

Had a great morning at Cannop brook. I took some sensible advice from previous reports here for an early start to avoid dog walkers. Great advice and it was a peaceful morning. Water was very low but fishable. Fish were found in unexpected shallows (also spooked many as I did not expect them to be there.) 12 trout and 2 roach. Majority of the trout took on size 14 Klinkhammer, where as the roaches took PTN in size 16.

22 x trout 6-10 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. All done with the mayfly now and the stream is low and clear. Fished early to get ahead of walkers and dogs.

Water levels were fairly low and clearing. Access to the stream was fairly easy; I think there might have been some maintenance since I last visited. The top section is also much clearer than it used to be. It was also surprisingly cool under the shelter of the trees. I've fished here numerous times now and surprised how the fish holding spots have changed as the river changes.

Seven trout, all but one caught on the nymph suspended under a Klinkhammer. I probably lost another 10. Also quite a few trout went for the Klinkhammer but were not hooked. At one point I spooked three fish that darted for cover in the roots. I stood there for several minutes after which they started to break cover and swim within 6 feet of me. Tried sight fishing with the nymph passing right in front of them and they all swam to the nymph but never took it.

Only the one small trout today but it was my son's first one, so all good also missed a very small trout. Water very high after all this rain and no other signs of fish seen.

A once in a blue moon day we all dream about. After my first visit early season I wanted to return here when the mayfly were coming off and more importantly when the brook had a bit more water and a bit of colour to it to relax the very spooky fish. This was the exact conditions I found the brook in when I began at the lower end of the beat. Fish chased mayflies up and down the stream where they fluttered around, some fish even leaping to take flies which were flying above the surface!

Despite this I kept on with the Duo, the method I began with and the takes were that thick and fast I saw no reason to change.

Still buzzing even a day later, red letter stream fishing.
