Not the best weather conditions, very warm, clear skies an bright sunlight. Also being a bank holiday weekend lots of walkers, dogs, cyclists, etc.

Water levels weren't too bad with some colour in the water. Managed to get five trout to hand, lost another 5 or 6. Did see some fish taking off the surface at one location, even with the bright sunlight shining on the water. A few casts into this area brought one trout to hand.

Fished from 3.30 - very enjoyable afternoon with 11 coming to hand and missed a few more, up to 8inch. A slow start until I worked out that a nymph with a bright red bead was what they seemed to be after.

Probably too much water, but very enjoyable despite only having one take (which I lost)! - took a Greenwells spider having tried various nymphs and dry flies.

...second trip today, fished 3.30-6.00. Brook actually slightly bigger than I was expecting from passport scheme description, nothing rising or obviously hatching but trout taking nymphs in all likely looking places, 10 between 6-9inches came to hand and probably missed a similar number. Duo very effective, gold head nymph under something buoyant. Great fun.

8 x trout 7-9 inches, Goldhead Hare's Ear nymph. All fat little fellows with a bright colour; they seem to have come through the winter well. I set myself the unpleasant task of hoiking a dead deer out of the water at least far enough for scavengers to get at it. There was a dead boar and a badger along the road nearby; corpses seemed to be everywhere in the Forest this morning! On a lighter note, the cycle hire shop at the top of the beat now has a coffee shop / refreshments arrangement which should be open weekends and holidays at least. Or go for a pint after fishing at the Woodman at the top of the village.

No fish caught. I have previously caught quite a few fish here. Quite a few of the previous fish holding spots have disappeared. Lots of gravel has moved through and changed the holding places. The water was also very clear. Didn't see a single fish the whole time I was there. Lots of evidence of wild boar entering the water. Puzzled about where all the fish were!

5 x trout 6-8 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. Today could have been easier on my patience, one way and another. To begin with, I was washed off from a day with a client on the upper Wye after the river rose following heavy showers. Irfon and Usk alternatives were also in flood, so we rescheduled. Then I thought I would cheer myself up by fishing the Cannop Brook near home. However, after catching a few at the bottom end I got less than halfway before running into a series of dog-swimming parties. To be fair, it is a Saturday morning in summer and a new path has been opened alongside the stream. Everybody wants to enjoy themselves. "Caught anything?"they ask, hefting another stick into the water for the dog. Smile back, because it's all a test of character.

Pleasant late afternoon/evening session, mainly on the lower half of the beat. Recent rain put a bit of colour in the water to mask my clumsy approach. Very occasional large, pale upwings spotted fluttering on the water which were usually snaffled. Nearly every pool held fish and produced rises to olive and black klinkhammers, also plenty of pulls on a soft hackled PTN. Probably a couple of dozen pulls or splashy rises but most were very small fish unable to get the hook properly in their mouths. 5 trout stayed on long enough to come to hand, largest about 10", smallest 5". Two takes in one of the deeper pool felt bigger, but I didn't see the fish so can't be sure.
