Bowled up at a favourite at about quarter to one. Fifteen degrees and sunny....again !!! In the morning, I'd had a recce of the Elan Valley, not good conditions for having a good day chasing Welsh Gold, and , on top of that a huge area of the moorland above Claerwen, going over to Tregaron direction has been on fire for a couple of days !! Lots of smoke in the Cwm Elan ....Hats off to the firefighters slogging it over the past few days up there with the choppers as well ....Tough work...
The fishing between one and just gone four way sublime, even on a very low Edw ..Lots of bugs about, medium olives, grannom and Brook duns out on parade ...Lovely takes to my dry, but slow slow wading required to have success!!! Five beauties made it to my net, three of them really nice fish, over ten inches and strong..Pleased with that result in such tricky conditions... Looks like a change on Monday folks, weather wise, Hallelujah!!! South west wind, and rain !!@ Bliss.... A fun session on a peaceful spring Edw .... back sooooooooon !!!!!

Low water, a bit of rain needed.
Challenging fishing, for me at least. Fish seen in the deeper pools, but nothing rising until early afternoon. 1 trout about 7 inches long on the dry fly. Nothing touched nymphs on this occasion.
Only 1 fish caught but many trees.
Beware the slippery stones on the river bed, studs would help if wading. Be careful too when entering the beat from the bank, barbed wire has to be crossed, low down but it could hole waders if you're not careful.

Bowled up at the Hergest pull in over the bridge ...Note to anglers : park right up away from the layby in the rough stuff !!! Farm wagons need that turning circle to drive off and to approach the narrow bridge .......
Arrived at this beat, had it to myself at just gone half two , carried on the motion, fishing dries in the fast stuff !! Dynamic sport, with aggressive confident hits ..... Again very low here, so making hay while it's still fishable..... lots of rain needed !!!
Dark olives and sedge on parade here .... Fish looking up, but , just like the Usk fish, they called ot time at half four !!! I didn't fish all this beat a couple of hundred yards short of the falls I think ......Otters prints present, and I wax pretty chuffed eithbthid section I'd done winter work on too !!! Some new pools are fun, there's also some that now have s huge ash tree in them....All adds variety , and refuge for young trout !!@ Actually lots of fry seen in fact masses .... in the slack stuff ....
A fantastic few hours on this beat too ....Nine brownies to my net ...sizes from six to maybe eleven inches....just the most fun ever!!
Packed up and ventured back across thf fields at quarter to five ...A lovely session , tis my absolute favourite technique, dry fly sport on the small stresms, sublime !!!! Right, this callsign is off for a bimble into Rhayader, and a cold scoop of the amber nectar ..... be rude not to hey, after a cracking day ...............

With bright sunshine and (slightly) warmer temperatures I thought things might get a bit easier. Wrong. Very little insect activity, the Summer hotspots seemingly empty and a cold gusty breeze all made it tricky. I did manage to scratch out four smallish trout by the end of the day, all on a single small nymph. A+ for effort.

Again, not easy. Another cold day. And again, the Edw in early Spring - or late Winter - shows itself to be a very different prospect from Summer’s relatively easy pickings. I worked slowly up from the bridge trying to find slower blue water and fishing through with a small nymph. I finished with four including one handsome plump fish of a shade under a pound. I have to admit, in these conditions, at this time of year, I was quite pleased with myself.

Thought I'd get a session in on the Edw, before tonight's weather warning, which pinged on my phone this morning, for heavy rain ... hopefully for quite a while too !!
When I parked up at half eleven the Edw was pretty low .... in desperate need of a good flush through too, in places that yucky dead algae in the quite nearly still pools .... It needs a dam good load of fresh water !!! Tis getting really jungley half way up, in need of Some TLC too, this beat along with Cregrina.... Not sure when this was last clipped and tidied up ???? I did a bit , but it really needs a winter session on it !!!
Anyway , wowser a fabulous session, amongst a tally of eleven to my net , sizes ranging from eight to I'd say fifteen inches maybe ... two of the fush were belters... both on the dry, sent barmy in the low water too....as always presenting a well placed dry fly!!!... well, I don't fish anything else from spring right through to September!!! Seems to work for me !!!!....
The one fish gave me a real run around on the six foot , two weight rig, lovely stuff, well rested, then he was away ..... spot on !! Some lovely rises to my dry this afternoon, that saud a good few olives and black sedge about.. Finished up by the Hergest Falls at half three, a fantastic sporting session on an old favourite..... ohhhh and walking back... there is that old "duck weeded" up pond in the woods, I watched a grass snake work it way across ....Real beauty too ....Did keep my eyes peeled re: crayfish, but on stone turning saw only two bullheads and one stone loach ..... Lovely to see these little fish ...... Will be back here once we've had a decent drop of rain !!!

Fished dry fly to very spasmodic risers & speculatoverly. Caught mostly in deeper pools, not large fish, though better did self-release (“other were salmon parr”), all safely returned.

Dropping to summer level now. Just a couple of hours late afternoon, as rain arrived not long after I did. Very little surface activity. A few rises to a prospected dry, though nothing stuck. Cattle in river.

Having fished most of this beat yesterday my expectations for today were modest but the river had other ideas. Despite the warmth of the day not many bugs were coming off, so I l searched the deeper runs and chutes with nymphs, not as pretty as dries but effective nonetheless. I caught steadily all the way up river, about twenty fish in all, maybe more, I wasn’t counting. One fish from an easily walked-past little chute produced the week’s highlight, a flawless trout of 1lb 6oz I first took in the amber water for a big chub or stray barbel. Any fish after that were pure bonus. A great day to cap a great week.
