Beat:Upper Cilieni

Well , up at Sparrows fart ; all jobs done and animals suitably fed and watered !! Off to the Upper Cilieni beat . . . Got to the bridge at half six reading twelve degrees in my truck; nice, and slightly misty too , North of the Brecon Beacons !!

Tackled up the six foot two weight with a tiny eighteen Parachute Iron Blue !! And interest In the pools I could get a cast away !! Fascinating beat ,.very varied but low obviously at the moment !! Fun watching small trout hammer my dry . ... caught thus morning on tiny paras and an F fly . . . .

Thirteen this morning five over eight inches ,.Two at about ten and the remainder beautifully marked small trout only perhaps five or six inches !!but taken fair and square on the dries !!!

Twas fun watching the trout in the shallow clear water and how they react to the fly ! In many cases it was an instant attack ! But in the slightly deeper pools a more surreptitious approach was made !!!

Didn't do all the beat ,.and only started from the parking spot up !! Cattle hurdles in the stream are a dam pain gggrrrrrrrr !!! And I think eight maybe more are in the stream and that's within a half mile stretch!!!! Lovely clear water though and lots of insect life under the stones and air Bourne! Most pools had fish in them willing to have a pop at a well presented fly !! Missed loads too this morning ; small fish are incredibly quick ! But I did tune in to them after several misses !!!!

Anyway a lovely five hours in a tranquil valley ! A true wild stream ,.Hard work but careful positioning and you'll get your trout !! Loved it here , may give the slightly easier fishing on the Parc Fishery a bash next week . . . . Back on my favourite Arrow in a few days . . . Homeward bound and something cold and amber coloured in a pint glass me thinks !! Sorted!!

The water was slightly coloured but very clear, your notes said it was overgrown, but really that's an under statement, the only way to fish it is to climb out and into the field and try somewhere else, you can not wade as the trees hang down to the water surface, I used a 5ft 6in rod even that was to long.
No fish caught as I think sliding down the bank to get in spooked the fish, and then you got to try and get out.
Never mind back to the Irfon ,next time.

Fished up from parking by bridge for a couple of hours. Cows in the river meant I had to start above them and missed a couple of previously quite productive pools. River had a good flow and a sporadic hatch. I tried several patterns but all three fish caught to dry blue winged olive with two out of three at 10". I was involved in clearing this stream over the winter and in parts I wondered if we could have been a bit more thorough!

I and another Wild Stream Permit holder (P.D.) spent a couple of hours on this beat starting around noon. We both drew a blank although I had a number of refusals using a deer hair sedge pattern. The beat is very fishable following the winter stream clearing but it is probably a little too early for the beat to start working.

Weather overcast, river low and gin clear. A trickle of mixed flies including a few Mays. I have really mixed feelings about this beat. The landscape is beautiful and truly remote. It has a decent head of wbt and a nice variety of riffles, glides and meanders.
However, there seems to be a tree or obstruction at every turn making castable fishing quite limited. Also many of the fishy looking heads and tails of pools were off limits due to debris. Maybe I am being picky due to the high quality fishing offered by the Passport, but not for me this one. Oh, and did manage 3 wbt to a size 16 Adams.

Did top half of Upper Cilieni from parking. Cast rate pretty low due to undergrowth but all the same had a good day with quite a few trout to hand. Most quite small but just under half were 10" to 12". Decided to try out the Eithram stream included on the beat. Unfishable in all but three or four places due to undergrowth and fallen trees. There are fish in it and I found a couple of them. I also slipped and took an early bath!

River running quite high and coloured after a few days rain so unsurprisingly very little action. No fish taken but beautiful day and beautiful location.

Bit of a cock up on the booking front by me I'm afraid, what I was thinking I dont know, this high up and at this time of year? Still it was only to be a bit of a respite from the main river and just for a couple of hours, ha! I thought I'd hit the lower half of the beat but after the "expedition" down to the start I realised another mistake by me. Even with the deftest of casting you really struggle to access any possible areas where fish may hold station. I'm no stranger to the wild streams and get great enjoyment from them, but this was a real struggle. The upper stretch from the bridge looked more open from what I could see but may have a few more "cattle gates". Blank.

This is certainly a wild stream! I fished it for a couple of hours with a six-foot cane rod - anything else would have been hugely over-gunned. Great fun though and four feisty little trout to show for it.
