First visit on the Wye. Initial reaction spinning up the left bank, donated a few flying c to the river, result nil. Decided to fish right bank on the fly 1" black/yellow conehead down the Lines caught a 9" brownie. Came back through again and had a great pull, initially thought I had hooked my first Wye salmon only to find a lovely 20" brownie landed and returned after a quick snap on phone. A great end to a day on the Wye.

An enjoyable but tough day in the sun with the river running high and fast. I did manage to find a couple of mint condition Barbel in a large crease about half way along the beat. The fish were 7lb 4oz and 5lb 8oz. The water levels are still dropping at the moment, so might try for another last minute session before the end of the season.
I had a lucky escape and unintended test of my new waders when I slipped into the margins while returning the first fish and ended up sitting in 6 inches of water. I could have been in real trouble if it happened to be a deep spot, so chest waders and a life jacket are highly recommended at the moment.

Fishing Saturday afternoon and Sunday. River level at first over the metre, fining down nicely. Wading at this level is unwise. However, on Sunday, I did manage to get in just below the bridge by the gauges and a little further down towards the cables. This is normally slower water, but at the 0.9m range I managed to fish the fly well.
Upstream where the water is faster, I fished from the bank and platform on both sides. Sunday was a perfect day filling me with confidence. Alas no fish for me.
The good news is that a salmon has now (12th March)
been caught below and I did hear of an earlier fish lost upstream. Good luck to all for the New Season!

Lovely sunny day, no fish raised, seen neither hooked, not a single one. Next time, maybe.

Lovely beat, quite a lot of good fly water at this height. About one and a quarter feet on the Glanusk gauge. A bit too deep to wade as much of it as I would have liked though. No sign of any fish moving at all apart from a few small trout in a sun-warmed shallow. Kingfisher, some small dark up-wings about.

Water still quite high. Caught just one Grayling which must be the smallest Grayling in the country, in fact I think the fly it took was bigger than the fish!
Lovely afternoon to be out though although water was still very cold.

Had a fantastic day at Courtfield, the conditions were perfect as at last it has stopped raining! We met Don who put us in the swims.
My friend J had a barbel in the first 20 minutes, then went on to catch 4 more up to 8lb.
I was blanking until 1.30pm, then moved further down Legg Meadow where I caught a nice chub of 3lb and then the barbel moved in. I had 4 big fish ranging from 7lb to 9lb and lost one. Such a shame the season is ending when the fishing is now so good. They need to extend the season by at least a month. We will be back!
Thanks Don.
