Had a very enjoyable and cold day at Middle hill court fishing with a few good friends fishing was slow with a really nice Chub of 5lb 8oz and Barbel of 6lb 1oz for my friends a blank for myself . The Wye gets into your bones it was stunning yesterday with the last leaves of summer falling, with river still pushing through after the recent floods.

Back on my favourite Wye beat. Forecast said a mild breeze, but I was met by a stiff cold downstream wind. Had intended to nymph fish but the wind put paid to that. Trotted red maggot the alternative. Had 12 o.o.s. trout from various spots, all between 12-18 inches, and in very fine fettle. Eventually found some grayling shoaled up in some deeper water. Managed to land 8, like peas in a pod between 12-13 inches. Lost 2 larger ones at the net. The 1 "other" was a small salmon parr.
On first arrival I scattered a flock of about 20 FEB's. Wildlife highlight was a pair of kites chasing each other over the valley for most of the day.

River was reading 0.701 at Cilmery and was probably a tad too high, but it was clear. Fished euro nymph set up but struggled with the breeze and getting my nymphs down quick enough in flow. Did manage to land 7 oos brown trout but no grayling. Most of the fish were caught in slack water out of the main flow, where you'd expect them to be if the river wasn't carry so much water.
