Very low. The beach was being used as a recreation centre, but managed to find a couple of swims at the end of the beat. Lots of barbel flashing gave the best swims away!

River was very low (reading 0.358 M on the Nat Resources Website). And the weather forecast hot and bright. We were on the water at 08:15 and shortly after saw a fair number of fish rising/jumping. One Brownie circa 14" taken on a size 20 GRHE with a red tag at 09:30 down the left side of Wood Stream. We stopped fishing at 11:50 as the air and water temp were continuing to rise. Lunch at the Chainbridge Inn was good and the service was super friendly.
Its clear that even though they are reluctant to be caught there are plenty of fish in this beat; I will definitely be back but when its cooler and there is more water in the river. My 2 guests loved it too.

Fishing:Trout (River)

Headed again to fish the cooler waters of the Upper Wye downstream of the Elan confluence where the water temperature was 15-17 degrees over the day, in contrast to the WUF guage at Llanstephan which was five degrees warmer at 20-22! Much like the last six weeks, there was little fly in the morning apart from some midge, needle fly and a (very) few pale wateries, followed by some sedges in the afternoon and evening…..and so, few rising fish. Not atypical of course for this time of year anyway, but more extreme than usual. However, fish still continue to look up and down, responding to jigs, to a #16 pale hare’s fur emerger and to a #14 grizzle EH caddis, which was by far the most effective today, particularly in the streamier water and whether fish were rising or not. Trout were mainly 10-14” and grayling mainly 11-14”, apart from a lovely lady of 17”, just a tad under 2lb. All fish swam off strongly and so returned home safely, as did the angler, despite another day’s fishing in 25 degrees. No cooling rain forecast for the rest of the month! Not good.
10 Trout, 15 Grayling
