Great day at How Caple Court. The day was booked to hopefully help a keen 9-year-old catch his first barbel. He did not leave disappointed. With support from his dad (who chose to not really fish much in order to keep an eye on the lad) and some advice from me, young Freddie caught five barbel up to 8 lbs 3 ozs and his first chub at 2 lbs 12 ozs. To see him come running along the bank leaping for joy after the first one made the whole trip worthwhile (not to mention a large amount of relief on my part!). Once I had passed on a few tips and put him in the right swim (at the second attempt), I managed a bit of fishing too. I managed to catch five barbel up to 9lbs 12 ozs. I could have stayed on for another hour or so after the largest but decided that was a satisfying end to the day and left. All the fish were taken in the fast water swims in the lower part of the stretch. The two deepest seemed best during the day but later on barbel were showing in the shallower fast water, which is where I caught the 9.

Low river but plenty of sea trout about. They were pushing through the shallows at dusk and were very active prior to a t-storm. Went quiet after that and fished until about 2am. Both sea trout were about 2-3lb and both were successfully returned. Both were caught on tube-flies.
