Beat:Talybont Reservoir

Fishing:Trout (Stillwater)

First visit to Talybont, met with flat calm conditions, not great for fishing, but easy to spot rises early in morning. Luckily a breeze did get up and managed to land 3 nicely marked fish, all on diawl bachs from top end.

River seemed low across and most of the beat. It seems the named storms from earlier in the year may have brought down trees, some large ones and together with earlier flooding have collected all sorts of detritus including a road sign! Some deeper pools seem to stagnating as a result of the disrupted flows and low levels. I noted at the upper reaches some works have/are taking place that look like water extraction, is the Foundation aware of this?

Beat:The Breconshire Fishery

Fishing:Trout (River)

River low and clear, very little wind. Surprisingly few flies hatching at the Dinas Road end of the beat, and hardly saw any fish movement until about 3pm. Then, having unsuccessfully tried spiders and various dry flies, I turned to a back and green klink with almost immediate success. Two nice fish, the latter about 14 inches. Nice also to see the kingfisher and a red kite overhead.

Lovely first day on this stretch of the Wye. Some good hatches during the the day and several fish showing at the surface. Does the river look a bit low for mid April ?

After two salmon caught this week hopes were high but I didn’t trouble the scorers other than one large chub which had me thinking salmon for a few seconds. Hopefully the other rods faired better in the evening. Water clear still at the moment.

Quick visit to Abbey Dore. No fish seen and none caught. The blockage at the top of the beat is getting bigger, doubt that any fish could get through it if they wanted to.

My thanks to MH and WUF for a lovely day on the beat, very easy access and nice looking water. Saw one leap but alas nothing for me- a score I’ll settle soon enough.
Kind regards,
