Didn’t see any fish. The water was Gin clear, and about .55 on the gauge. Fished all the deeper water from the Church up to the Grandstand (very difficult to access, some dead trees need removing). Temperature was 1 degree all day as the fog didn’t clear. Fly fished with a team of 3 Grayling flies. Would be interested to hear from OB of Gloucestershire where he located the shoal?

Dense fog, and a little chilly when we arrived (-3 degrees). Water pushing through but looked ideal, so we persevered despite biting cold. Tried various methods through the day, but only managed 1 Grayling - caught by DJ on a small nymph. Very tough going, but great to get out on the River !

10 x grayling 14-17 inches, 4 x out of season trout 10-15 inches, trotting. Another warm winter day, cloudy with increasing wind. With the Llanstephan gauge at 2ft 3 inches and some colour in the water, it was a matter of concentrating on slower water near the bank. A lovely class of good-looking grayling today, but they were surprisingly spooky with a need for light tackle to get more solid takes. Unwanted trout came muscling in to spoil the fun towards the end. I had a very pleasant chat with visiting day ticket rods.

An unseasonable 14 degrees this afternoon, drizzling on and off. The Ithon showed 0.30 on the gauge and the water was distinctly clay coloured. Result was 1 x (or should it be 2 x) 16 inch grayling, plus 1 x out of season 10 inch trout, trotting. Hesitation about the number to record is because today I actually caught the same fish twice within a space of less than 10 minutes. One nice grayling was caught in a run, photographed and returned slightly upstream. A couple of trots later the float dipped again, less of a fight this time, and there was the same grayling again. No doubt about it because of a very distinctive bite wound on the tail. Immediately after being returned he had gone right back to feeding!
I have had this experience a couple of times before with grayling, and once with a Spanish river carp on a hot afternoon in Toledo - floating crust was the bait in that case.
By the way, thanks to those who sent sympathetic notes about my Landrover breakdown. The good news is that it wasn't as catastrophic as I thought and the old girl is already back in action. I still have to do jury service when the new season opens though!
