Quite difficult conditions with frequent showers of much needed rain but river very low. A fair amount of fly life hatching mostly bright yellow bodies. No luck with gold heads so switched to dry even though no rises. Had a few rises to a yellow dry and managed to hook one. Later had two on a small yellow emerger at top of beat. Watched otters playing for ten minutes fifteen yards from me and decided to leave it to the experts!

Always a gamble booking this beat at this time of year, just wanted to make amends for a dismal display back in April ! Alas recent lack of rain had left this stretch of river wanting. The faster water was very skinny and the deeper water was nigh on at a standstill. No hatch, no fish seen or risen, easterly breeze steadily increased and drizzle turned to heavy showers, I got the message.

After many years of fishing I decided to introduce my wife to the joys of angling! Not the weather we had hoped for but that's the first rule of fishing! After a quick casting lesson on the bank Mrs E was soon throwing a decent line out and contacting the odd fish. Only a couple of little ones landed but we had a fun day and plenty of stories to share over dinner in Hay-on-Wye that evening.
