Promising conditions but a disappointing day. Fly fishing 0900 - 1300. Sunny with westerly breeze. No fish rising and very little action. One brown trout - returned.

Lovely stretch of the Usk, clear and sunny day. Plenty of fish seen and a few lost. Only fished half of the beat as two kayakers were doing multiple runs of the upper stretch. Given how spooky the trout had been until this point thought I’d only be wasting my time to carry on.

Had a great morning session on the dry fly . Caught enough fish on the nymph in this stream so far this season, so decided to bring a small selection of dry flies and emerges. Plenty of rises, but managed to spook most of the fish with cluncky casting. Something I could have got away with, with higher water levels and dull light conditions. I missed a few takes on a size 16 brown Klink. Then, switched to a size 18 and managed to convince four juveniles . Not sure where all the bigger trout are, caught only juveniles this season thus far?

Hot sunny/ broken cloud water level low. Little fly activity all day but enough sporadic rising to have some fun. Most fish rising in smooth open shallower water . Very choosy! One really good fish and a couple of medium sized on size 14 Adam’s. Very few mayfly and fish not interested in them.
Then from about 7pm till it was too dark to see there were lots of rising fish. Still very choosy but managed to connected with a large number although only six more made it to the net. Size ranged from 9-14” all in great condition. Fish only interested in small fly patterns 14-18 sedge/clinkhammer/ and Adam’s all caught fish.
