A lovely spring day with birdsong, celandine, otter tracks and spraints and at one point a dipper flopping about in the water trying to take me away from its nest. I started fishing a heavy nymph but nothing doing. Around midday some flies started coming off and I saw a rise - I still had the nymph on - I cast to the fish - the fishing gods smiled upon me and I caught a 9” trout. Changed to a dry but no other signs of life. Progress upstream very difficult in places. There are quite a few livestock barriers or the remains thereof strung across the stream. Most of them are so delapidated that they no longer serve the original purpose but still spoil the fishing

Quite cold higher up the valley, until the sun cleared the mist in the afternoon. River running fast and clear, but not much hatching. So, only saw a couple of rises but I could not tempt them and after half an hour went back to the small gold head PTN. Nothing in the faster shallower runs, but got 3 good 10/11" trout from deep pools and runs. In really good condition, fought hard in the strong current. About half way up the beat be prepared for a couple of dead sheep with the burnt remains of rubbish, not pleasant.

Lovely day, nice weather, nice river height and good conversation with other anglers. Fish? I did see a couple show but nothing took a fancy to my fly. Oh, and only one canoe......

Cool with a chilly wind changed to mild with a warmer wind during the afternoon. One brief hatch of March browns whilst we were on the bank with coffee and a sandwich therefore only yielding one to the dry. Almost all the other fish taken on a team of spiders fished upstream. 15 fish with as many lost. Best were the 2 grayling and 2 of the trout all in the 14 to 15 inch class, all safely returned.

First time on the Taff and some lovely water to go at. The only disappointment was the hideous amount of rubbish littering the banks and bed. It is such a crying shame that with the heavy industry now gone and water quality restored that there is still so much human derived waste blighting what should be an absolute jewel. Fishing was very tough and we couldn't really blame the conditions but low pressure, a little flush through and some cloud would have helped. I would have thought a fish or two could have been intercepted on a speculative nymph but no such luck. A very sparse hatch of olives at mid day was insufficient to drag any fish to the surface, other than one lone individual which rose three times, the last time to my C fly but I conspired not to disturb it with my hook! I will be back.

One trout close to two lbs made my day on a dry fly. 3 small fish on spider wet patterns later in the afternoon.

A great day on the Upper Usk. A limited large dark olive hatch made surface activity sporadic. Still a nice 2lb trout taken on a small dry olive imitation, another bigger fish lost and quite a few other fish rising on and off. A close encounter with an otter and a day on this beautiful part of the Usk in spring left two anglers as happy as sand boys. Thank you WUF.
