Decided to give the Llynfi a bash from my regular Arrow and Lugg beats . . . . Was ten when I bowled up , a little overcast , 18 degrees and a nice breeze , things looked good .
Tackled up with my usual six foot two weight outfit , and a tiny parachute black gnat , almost immediately having several hits by small but very pretty trout parr , which is promising for this river , as two years ago was the pollution incident so happy days , and plenty of small fry and bullheads under stones . . . . .
Had my first "decent "trout , possible ten inches in the head of a deep pool , great spirited fight and quickly returned . This happened several times , with good rises , prospecting areas working my way up the river . Was a nice change from the confines of the Arrow beats , easy peasy , and wide and able to get a proper cast under the over hanging alders , great fun . Four of the brownies came to the dry , and two on a single small gold head PTN .
The deep pool half way up the beat , had a nice surprise , a lunker of a grayling took my nymph , steady bend in the six foot rod , beautiful specimen , possibly fifteen inches , and strong as an ox , quickly admired , then released , spot on !!!!!!
Had one more grayling again in the nymph nearly at the top of the beat , again in a deep pool , hit the nymph hard , about ten inches , and super condition . . . .
A really fun four hours , six brownies and two grayling , from this recovering cracking river , shall head back again very soon , oh and it would have been rude not to call in to the Honey Cafe and sample one of the delicious cakes and a cuppa, so obviously I did the decent thing and gave it a go . . . . . Again !!!!!! Great morning , and a nice chill out at the cafe . . Happy days !!!!!!!!

Great conditions, water dropping nicely and clearing throughout day. Unfortunately no signs of any fish... I think we need a pro-longed spate to move some fresh fish into and throughout the system - encouraging those that have survived this unprecedented Summer to leave the safety of their lairs... Roll on Autumn!

Slightly dirtier than expected water made things quite tough to start, but improved throughout the day. First few fish fell to nymphs then 3 larger fish came to a white sculpin lure and tungsten head. Great hatches all day but very few fish rising...

This may be my favourite beat on the Wye so far. It’s just got such a diversity of water.
Unfortunately I fished like a complete muppet and didn’t do the water any justice. Maybe it was my reptile brain kicking in as wading was...challenging , there was enough colour after recent rains that once past my knees I couldn’t clearly see the bottom and spent most of my energy avoiding falling: I failed there too falling three times. I had one brief 30 min spell where I fished ok and most of the fish came in this small window including two nice trout measuring 14 and 15 inches. With water temps at 15.1 degrees they were in great shape.
With hindsight I’d have fished this beat in the afternoon as the river was fining down quickly. By early afternoon when I left wading was much easier.
The fishing gods did grace me with my best Grayling in 10 years. A fat 16 plus-a-tad incher that took as I was trying not to fall over, again, and not paying the slightest attention to my line.
I’ll definitely be back to this stunning beat.
