When the cork in your Kelly kettle is so dry that it rattles and your favourite river rod smells decidedly musty, it tells you that you haven't been fishing nearly enough recently. So I may just have been very rusty, but I really struggled today. It was very bright all day and those few fish I saw rise seemed to do so once and then disappear. It was mighty frustrating. I finally landed a beautiful trout of around a pound just before 5:00pm. It came to a small weighted nymph. I hoped this might signal a change and a better early evening to come, but it was not to be. Still, today was also a blatant bit of a Royal Wedding avoidance so perhaps the fishing gods judged me harshly. Not too harshly though: when you spend your time in a stunning place like this watching kites, dippers and herons and listening to cuckoos, the world seems pretty good.

Sight fishing for large trout. Tough conditions with low water and bright sun. I hooked and lost a large trout on the dry third cast, it then swam right up to me to check out what had caused the disturbance to it's breakfast. A couple of other good fish were stalked and eventually spooked. A tricky beat but one that keeps me coming back.

A great days fishing using tradition wets then dries once the wind dropped talking two half lb brownies for the pan and releasing the rest to see another day. Lots of fishing to be seen with shoals of small arctic char patrolling the banks.

Another nice beat with varied fishing, Unfortunately the fish proved hard to tempt in the bright and hot conditions, a few olives hatching here and there but no notable hatches really and not much rising.
Two fish caught and released on nymphs

We'd booked salmon rods but with the water on the low side, decided to stick to trout fishing. There were sporadic rises through the day with occasional hatches of yellow mays and olives. We had some good fish on nymphs in the fast water and then at about 6pm the rise started with more fish coming to dries, mostly cdc olive emerger type patterns.
Great beat with easy access and outstanding quality of fish. 10 in all to the two rods ranging from 1lb to 2.75lb but many more lost in the faster water.

1st time fishing the Usk - Glan-yr-Afon.
River had a good level of water. Very bright and sunny?
One or two small fish rising but no takers. A few mayfly around and a lot of caddis in the afternoon. Tried nymphing to no avail. Tried some parachute adams amongst many others to no avail. All in all a beautiful stretch but I found it really difficult in sunny conditions. Need to work on my rivercraft. Great weekend though and will be back to the Usk to conquer! Stayed at the Old Rectory Hotel 4m away which was very nice and can highly recommend.
