Nicer day today and this beat not carpeted with leaves like Trallong was yesterday. Didn't see anything rise despite sometimes prolific hatches. 2 lovely, very hard fighting trout in quick succession on red tag gold head nymph but success was short lived. Resorted to small streamer for last hour but it made no difference for this angler.

28th September – Doldowlod
The weather forecast was slightly challenging and river conditions uncertain so we left booking until this morning – what a wonderful flexible system! True to suspicions the Llanstephan gauge was showing 2ft 6 inches so that area was out – and Usk was also up. That made me wonder if most of the rain was coming down the Irfon and/or Ithon – and the fact that the Rhyader gauge was at 1 ft 3 inches confirmed that the upper river was going to be fishable – just about!
When we stood on Llanwrythl bridge to assess prospects at 11am the river looked perfect so we were up for a good day – and so it proved. Accessing at Ddol farm to the lower part of the beat I dropped in to my favourite location – only to hook 5 fish in first 6 casts and for them all to come off! Have they been practicing again? Needless to say perseverance brought rewards and we ended up with 24 grayling up to 15 inches, all to dries and safely returned. No persistent hatches although some large needle flies and sedges around. As usual the two best fish got off – a significant brown that broke me when it slashed at a skating fly on a tight line, and a big grayling that broke Jimbo when it got below him in to fast water.
Once again Doldowlod comes up with the goods….many thanks again for excellent fishing.

Nice days fishing with river in good condition and fish feeding freely. Started in the lower sections but moved after losing too much tackle in the many snags. The top field was very productive and although we had no very big fish, we managed a good number of 7lb plus barbel .

Another disappointing day on this, normally, productive stretch. Weather pleasant, but only 1 chub of 4 and 1 barbel at 5.12 to show for our efforts. It was, however, good to catch up with Don again and hear about his plans for the future.

1 foot 9 inches and fairly clear. Everything looked good, but nothing seen or touched. Raining now, so no doubt the river will rise quite quickly and there will be some new opportunities.
