The river looked good but the fish didn't respond although a few were lost in the snags, access at the entrance with a standard vehicle is a problem and I scraped the bottom of my car both getting in and out, for this reason we will not be returning which is a shame.

A damp, still and uneventful day, a little disappointing after the number of salmon this beat has produced over the past few days. River at just under a metre, steady and clearing, so it looked good, but I had no takes in 7 hours fly (sunk line) and only about four fish seen moving all day. At the end of a very wet day I had great difficulty getting my car (Audi 4wd) back up the muddy slope to the road and would caution against driving down to the riverbank in wet weather unless you have an off-roader.

With only six days of the trout season left and the weather forecast to change from mid-week, I decided to head to the Gwent AS water and give it a go. With the Glanusk guage at 10", the river tea-coloured and dropping, 13 degrees in the water and a balmy 15-18 degrees autumn day with cloud and no wind, surely the bugs and fish would oblige! I fished from 11 until 4 and some fish rose from arrival until about 2 p.m., but even after that there were a few risers and when there were not, they still came up to emergers in the foam lanes. As usual at this time of year, small HE emergers did the trick, almost certainly representing the small olives and PWs, some of which were around from the off. There were also quite a few YMs, and what looked like LBDs in the shallower margins, during the afternoon. Fish from 10 -15", the latter around to 1.5lb mark. Missed others and dropped two much better fish. Grrrrrrrrrrrr! Happy days.

This was a damp old day. The Barbel were out to play right from the start. All 11 caught on pellet 10or 14mm,
the biggest was 8lb 4 oz.
Didn't get a bite after 1.00 pm, so headed home 3pm. Another great weekend on the Wye.
The new steps were very useful for an "old man"

I had hoped the drop in levels would continue but the gauge at Ross, http://www.gaugemap.co.uk/#!Detail/801/820 was showing 0.725 and this was about 0.25 higher than ideal for safe wading access to the better areas. Oh well we all have to blank sometimes, but I do believe this is my first here in many a year!
Anyway, not too much in the way of debris coming down so everyone should be able to fish, game/coarse, without any trouble for a while yet.
Bank maintenance on this beat is excellent but an easier egress point lower down on right bank, for those who are wading, would be most welcome as thrashing back upstream is exhausting! Or am I just getting old ?
