The first rule of Chub Club is that you don’t talk about Chub Club...

Chub Club is a made up association, for which I am the founder member, for anglers who have caught more than 20 chub in a 2 hour session and not a dingy back street establishment somewhere in West Bromwich that caters for a certain clientele who like the larger lady.

With a reduced sized rucksack and less bait than usual, I braved Heart Attack Hill to reach the Lucky Stones at the beautiful Fownhope 5.

I've always done ok here and it didn't disappoint, with the chub practically chucking themselves on the hook at one point.

23 chub, 1 eel and a big bonus barbel. All the fish came in a mad 2 evening hours between 6 and 8, caught either rolling with fatty pork meat or light ledger with fish flavoured pellet.

So good to be back on the Wye.

Fished one of the deeper swims and found plenty of chub but sadly no barbel. Chub ranged from 1-4 pounds.
Beautiful venue. Good access in the dry.

Very hard. Water temperature 17C and air temp 14C. Only saw three fish rise in about 5 hrs. Nice breeze and ripple. Two tugs. No insects. Mid summer blues begin!

A lovely day on a venue we have not fished for many years. Despite the near perfect conditions the fishing was a little slow. However we were treated to a wildlife extravaganza, ducks and offspring of many varieties, kingfishers, buzzards, a red kite and very tame swans who were happy to just walk right past us on route to a sleep in the corn field.
The two Barbel were 4lb and 6lb but the surprise of the day was a rainbow trout 2lb ish which took a pellet. A glorious looking fish safely returned for another day.
A sunny day, wildlife in abundance, a few fish and the castle as the backdrop it is pretty hard not to have a good day.
