Only the second time ever we have fished this stretch decided to fish opposite ends of the beat to try and locate the fish. Eventually found them in the last field in the deeper water. First fish at 3.00pm, caught on boilies and groundbait feeder. Much more successful overall than my first visit. Will be back next year.

Beat:Pwll y Faedda near Erwood

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:1

20 x grayling 11-16 inches, 6 x out of season trout, long trotting. I fished until just after lunch - cold initially, but bright later. Another day with virtually no rising grayling, so I didn't regret the decision to go trotting. The grayling are still there, and a very nice average size today with a lot of 15 inch fish. Plenty of salmon crashing about in the river now. Also, one of those dramatic low level flights up the valley by a Chinook today, just hopping over the power lines and I could distinctly see the pilots as it approached. The grayling seemed unaffected by the considerable vibration.

A cold start but a beautiful autumnal day on the river. Two Cormorants feeding just below the woods. Six swims tried, two small Barbel at the death, tough days fishing.

Conditions: overnight frost (temp 3 deg) and the water low and clear together with bright sunshine. Fished the lower section all swims and tried different flavours and sizes of pellets and meats. No bites or interest all, the fish were simply not feeding. Nonetheless, an enjoyable day on the river perhaps broken up by the bird scarier.

River low and clear with little flow. All fish were taken on legered Elipse pellet from various swims from below the island to the bottom of the beat. The weather was very mild and overcast. Lovely beat thanks WUF.

Arrived at the river around 9am. The conditions were not ideal as the river was very low and clear so took my time to consider my swim choice and decide where i thought the barbel might be. I decided to set up in one of my favourite swims in the wood section of the river. Started with my usual tactics of baiting and waiting and I baited little and often for an hour or so.
Had 2 barbel at 8lb 8oz and 9lb within my first 2 casts and then really struggled from about 10.30am until 4.30pm to get a bite from anything on the barbel rod. Trying lots of different tactics like smaller hook baits, longer hook lengths but couldn't get a bite for love nor money! I did manage to pick up a nice looking pike at 10lb 8oz on the predator rod on a bait fished down the margin towards a fallen tree around 1.30pm.
As the light gently started to fade around 4.30pm it was like a switch had been flicked and it went absolutely crazy...! I'm guessing that a large group of fish had moved onto my baited area and they were keen for some grub as I was getting rod wrenching bites every cast and picking up some beautiful barbel... loads of action. Ended up with 11 barbel in total and a couple of chub at the end of the session. I definitely think that due to the low clear conditions that early morning or later in the afternoon is the one here!!
All barbel taken on paste wrapped boilies and method lead tactics. A great days fishing in the end! Looking forward to coming back!
