As it was an overcast day was hoping for hatches and dry fly action. Unfortunately said hatches did not materialise so set about speculative casting into likely seams and spots with olive emergers in slower water and olive comparaduns in the riffles. This provoked loads of explosive takes but hooking and keeping the fish hooked proved a major challenge. Nevertheless an action packed enjoyable day. Access to and exit from the water up the steep banks is still very challenging perhaps even more so due to prolific undergrowth. Saw another chap fishing behind me so called Wye Usk as I was the only one booked in that day. I was asked to approach him and determine why. A thoroughly nice chap it turned out he had permission to fish the left bank (WU only have rights on the right) He was actually fishing all the river, left and right. I was lucky he was behind me ..... Learning points are that if someone knows or pays the owner of the the other bank where WU only have rights on one you could have unexpected company. This has fiscal implications if one does a block booking in expectation of a solitary experience.

Fishing Passport Note : Fishing more than half way across the river (at single bank fisheries or where staggered) does happen, but it is usually an agreement that fishery owners have between themselves and a certain amount of etiquette normally applies whereas anglers will not fish across if the opposite bank is occupied. Technically, however, it is illegal to fish more than half way.

Various olives hatching, some mayflies and yellow May duns also. Cold north wind eventually put off insects, fish and anglers.

Fish were rising for the first hour when I got there in the morning, difficult to tempt and missed the only rise to my dry fly, after that all went quiet on the surface. Fished nymphs in the faster water and landed five trout, one was about 2.5lb on a hares ear nymph, the others up to a pound. Also had two chub up to 1.5lb.

Good weather conditions and water very clear, signs of a healthy river. A lot of fly about. Predominantly Mayfly and Olives but the trout were ignoring these and rising to tiny flies. Fish easily spooked. Ripples from waders put fish down. Had to scale down to 0.127mm tippet and size 22 flies and improve stealth. Had a few looks at Halfords Gnat and Adams but needed to go smaller. Changed tactics to size 16 caddis and had two small brownies around 10". Some large fish rising in awkward places but couldn't get them to take an imitation dry fly. Resisted using nymphs as there were so many fish rising. Bottom end of beat accessible, easy wading with deeper slower runs separated by water fall breaks. Studs in boot sole helped wading grip on slippery bottom. Access and wading gets a lot more difficult the further upstream you go. Long beat didn't fully cover in one day. Interesting challenge on a water with much variation. Will return again to see if I can crack the conundrum.

All fish carefully released alive . Two were on the pound mark and fought hard . A very enjoyable day on this lovely beat. Unfortunately , a cold downstream wind scuppered the evening rise .
