Area:Middle Wye
Beat:White House
Fishing:Coarse
No. of Anglers:2
This was my first visit to the Wye and it won't be my last. The White House stretch is in a beautiful setting and provides a variety of swim types - from shallow glides to deeper runs and holes. Although we enjoyed moderate success, it was a blazing hot day with full sun most of the time. The fish seemed to feed better at both ends of the day and when the sun was less bright. We stayed at the White Lion in Ross which was ideal - very friendly and comfortable and run and frequented by anglers. Booking the tickets from the Wye & Usk Foundation was very straightforward and the staff were extremely helpful.

A nice beat but no barbel caught, lots of Chub and an eel. It was a bit of a mission to get over the hill but nice views for those brave enough for the climb.

Area:Usk
Beat:Ashford House
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
Water was very clear, and low enough to enable wading throughout large sections of the beat. (Access points have been cut into the overgrown parts of the bank - thanks WUF).
We took numerous fish throughout the day, primarily small and feisty 'fingerlings', but some good fish were also taken using very small nymph patterns fished through the faster water at the heads and tails of pools (only one taken on a dry fly). All fish safely returned.

We had to battle our way through 5ft high undergrowth to get to swims but had a good day after that, great stretch and will be back again.

Quiet day overall not helped by the blazing sun (yes I know I shouldn't complain). 3 barbel around the 6lb mark and 1 chub about 3lbs.

3 lovely trout caught on dries, should have been a good day. However, whoever said this beat is easy wading needs to review their opinion, not only is it very difficult in places but I would say dangerous. There are very few safe places to enter the river and there are more trees down across the river than any other that I have fished. When you cannot get across/round the tree you have to get out of the river - that's when the fun really starts. You then need a machete to cut through the jungle of 6ft tall weeds, nettles etc to try to find a way back to a path and then start again, trying to find another safe place to get back in the river, until you meet the next felled tree that you cannot get round. This beat is definitely not for the faint hearted.
