Having missed a season on this stream due to the low flows last year, I was excited about the prospect of fishing the Escley again. The river was still carrying extra water with a tinge of colour (perfect), the sun was intermittent through cloud with a light breeze. I fished a black flashback nymph, 2 feet under an olive kilnkhammer and caught 2 fish in the first pool, catching in every pool thereafter. Lost a very good fish, perhaps 1lb + in one deep gutter, and landed 3 fish of 11-12". The total was around 15 browns in 2 hours of fishing. The Escley at its best. I recommend anyone who wants to fish a small stream but cant' quite get motivated or are a bit unsure, to get out there now - following the rain and after superb clearance work by the volunteers, you'll have no better chance in my opinion.

A beautiful 15lb fresh hen salmon from Bridge pool. Took a carefully presented size 10 Cascade just between the two rocks and gave me a very dour and strong fight. Had a 1.5lb trout from same pool and a strong pull in the Spring pool (Gromain beat) that I am 90% sure was a salmon.

Thanks for your advice and introduction to the Wye - I had no idea it is such a wonderful river and offers such superb fly fishing.

Tried fishing the fly at the top of the beat. Blustery wind and deep wading made this rather difficult; a spinning rod would probably make fishing the pools there a bit easier. However I had one strong pull in the Corner Pool, I'm pretty sure from a salmon, and a large trout from the Hut Pool, both on a black and yellow tube. I switched to a trout rod and had 3 small trout from the streamy runs on my way back to the bottom of the beat. All fish returned. Thanks to WUF.

None caught, but lost two fish which both took a dry GRHE. No fish rising other than those hooked, although there was some fly activity including occasional hatches of olives.
