Area:Upper Wye
Beat:Abernant
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
Conditions: Cool (9-12/14 degress C), light breeze, with intermittent downstream wind throughout the day until 15:00, mostly bright and sunny with a few short downpours and then rather calm from 16:00 to 18:00 (main hatch of Yellow May, see below). River clear and very beautiful.
Catch: 19 grayling and six trout. Most grayling around the 3/4lb to 1lb mark with one strong fish to 2lb. Trout mostly 10” to 11“, one to 12”. A few WBT parr. Fish taken throughout the beat, excluding the Stone Catch. Morning fish on a two fly upstream nymph cast (gold head GRHE (18) and heavier nymph (various; 14 to 12), all taking the smaller fly; and a few on the dry Adams (14). All afternoon fish on Adams /CDC variant (16/14). Very positive takes, the fly matching (in size) a nice hatch of Yellow May (I think). Various (smaller) upwinged flies hatching (but in smaller numbers). All fish in pristine condition, and exceedingly lively. All quickly and safely returned.
Pollution: quite a few golf balls (removed), these also on Ty-Newdd.
Other: One dead roach seen in Edw Pool. A large salmon resting at the bottom of the Edw Pool.
A wonderful days fishing. Many thanks to the WUF for two lovely days fishing. Keep up the excellent work.

Our second visit this year to this beautiful stretch of the Usk. Again the river was in perfect condition. If there was a down side to the day, then it was the very heavy, slow moving showers. We caught several small WBT, all returned to the river. There was a good evening rise which lasted about 45 mins. otherwise, we fished various nymphs most of the day. Certainly a beat we like to return to on another visit.

Wonderful stretch of water with just about every type of swim imaginable. Weather was too bright for much action during the day but as soon as the sun went behind the trees, the action started. Had three barbel (4lb, 4lb & 7lb) in the last hour. Lost a double figure fish after a twenty minute battle. Last hour made up for 6 hours of inactivity.
A bad days fishing beats a good days working!
