Short session today due to the blistering heat, so I only fished for 3 hours from 9 til 12. Had 1 barbel of 5 1/2 lbs and lost another which nearly dragged my rod into the river.

Arrived early morning. Sun shining. As this was my first visit I checked out length of beat and chose to fish accessible swim about midway in "near bank gulley". Quiet but improved midday. Caught 4 nice chubb and 1 barbel.
Wonderful location in beautiful countryside. Parking in wet conditions would be restricted. Another very enjoyable day. Thank you W.U.F.

Fly-fishing from 10AM to 6PM. Few jumping salmons seen but nothing caught. I have tried plenty of flies (Tubes, stoat tails, etc...). Many canoes on the morning.
The upstream pools are very dangerous to access on the right side (downstream). The last pools are better.

Second day for me made special by my son joining me for a days fishing on the magnificent River Wye.
The river had only dropped inches overnight and we fished the more prolific swims from the previous day, my son getting first pick and taking full advantage he landed 22 Chub to 4lb and 11 Barbel to 8lb 4oz his best ever catch by far. I managed 12 Chub to 4lb 6oz and 6 Barbel to 7lb all in all a very good day.
Thanks to Wye and Usk for more memorable fishing on this magnificent river.

My first time on this stretch and thanks to some very good advice from Don I had a very nice days fishing. In all I had 8 Barbel with 1 lost on rocks with a best fish of just over 7lb and the smallest at 2lb. I also had 2 Chub of 3lb each and 2 smaller Chub of 8ozs, all fish taken on swimfeeder with pellet hookbait. A very pleasant stretch of river and I look forward to another day soon.

Bit of a disappointing day with no salmon caught although they were definitely in the beat around the Vanstone and Maddox, saw several.
With the heat in the middle of the day I adopted an early and late approach going home once the first canoes arrived and coming back to fish in the evening.
My beef is with the state of the banks and the river inaccessibility at the upper end, Pylons, Doghole, the V, etc.
Having parked the car as far up the beat as possible I spent 45 minutes walking up the river to try and access the beats top end.I found it was impossible and in fact in a lot of places I couldn't even see the river. It was clear to me that no one had been there in quite some time and that would include a man with a strimmer. So my early start was a waste of time because by the time I'd found my way back to the Maddox and Vanstone a hour and a half has past without me wetting a line.
I feel the Foundation should comment on these factors when anglers book a beat. I know bankside vegetation grows in the summer but it would be great if access points could be cut to the riverside at the least.
WUF note - After not being fished for several weeks due to high water, the banks had become overgrown but strimming work and clearance work has subsequently been carried out with further work planned for the near future.
