Arrived about 3'ish, what a difference a week makes! Last Friday I was wearing a fleece this Friday I nearly got heat stroke walking to the river in my waders
Looking out at a wide expanse of shallow gin clear water illuminated by the a glaring sun hanging in a cloudless sky I decided to do a do a bit of nymphing in the faster water further up the beat. Lost too many nymphs in those deep swirly pools , my effects were hampered by picnicking children thrwing stones and swimming! Although to be honest I don’t think they made much of a difference. Lost one small fish on a Gold bead HE.
Decided to settle down and wait for the evening rise, which was the main purpose of my visit and conditions were perfect. Watched a heron flying from pool to pool for an hour, he didn’t have any luck either. No fish had stirred by 8 o clock so got in the car and went down to Glan Usk (plan B) where I could cover more water in the car to find some rising fish.

Arrived at Glan Usk, fish rising in the tail of the fast water above the bridge, got one about 12” on an Adams missed two others, the rest of the fish lost interest.
Drove down to the bottom beat, lots of fish rising but not apparently interested in anything I had in my fly box, changed flies regularly until I couldn’t see to tie knots.
What ever they were taking it was they were “sipping” them from the surface. Sometimes with a head and tail rise action, rather than a “snatch”

A lovely little stream with some surprisingly deep pools despite the low water conditions. I caught 5 trout up to 7 inches all on Kilinkhammer/Greenwells in a very enjoyable mornings fishing. A good number of Olives hatching off and a few Mayfly making an appearance which was good to see.

After spending the morning fishing the Llynfi Dulas, I had a break for a few hours during the heat of the day and popped in to the booking office to pick up some more vouchers. The advice and helpfulness of the WUF team was excellent again and following this I spent a few hours in the evening fishing at Llanstephan.
There were lots of rising fish and while I missed more than I hooked, I was very pleased with the three browns I caught on a klinkhammer, which were all 1lb to 1.5lb.

13 trout caught, many more lost. All fish were between 1/2 lb and 1 lb, and all safely returned. flies were mostly parachute Adams, or black gnats. In all my years of fishing, have never seen so many trout rising at the same time! We both enjoyed our 4 days fishing here on the Usk, and will be back for sure next year. We would like to commend you all at the Foundation for all the effort you have put in to provide us, the visiting angler, with such wonderful opportunities to fish in Wales!
