Area:Monnow
Beat:Monnow Valley
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:1
1 x 11 inch grayling, 2 x out of season trout 10 and 14 inches. A search for the elusive grayling with the trotting rod, and a difficult day really, although I am not quite sure why. The Monnow looked to be in excellent condition.

We were beaten by the flood water eventually. We went back to last week's productive swim but found that dragging weed was a problem and despite apparent drop in water level the flow seemed faster and it was difficult to hold the bottom. So we went to a slower patch of water at the bottom end of the beat and coaxed two barbel to the net. When the water crept around my ankles we realised that the water levels were rising despite a glorious and dry day. More weed and debris, two more barbel and I was chased up the bank by rising flood water, tree branches and other debris. So the dreams of 20-30 barbel did not become reality. We ended the day with 6 barbel to 9lbs and four decent chub. That's fishing! Thank you WUF, we'll be back next year.

3 Rods, 8 barbel (5/2/1)and 2 lost. River up a little but quite clear which may explain less-than-hoped-for catches. Water 11degC and some loose weed coming down. We left at dark before the 3 foot surge came through.

The river seemed to be above normal when we arrived and going like a train! We therefore had difficulty in finding anything like slack water. We eventually found a couple of spots close together where the was a modicum of slack, close in under the bank. The river rose a further 18" while we were there and the fishing became even more difficult. I had just one take all day, which hooked me into a barbel, but the fish very quickly took me into the roots of a small willow, and that was the end of that! My son, fishing a few metres downstream blanked comletely.

First time on the beat. A big river - it is surprising what a difference being a few miles downstream makes - and, with a nasty downstream wind, was glad that I took the 9 ft rod. Mind you, with so many meanders and being able to fish both banks, the downstream wind was less of a problem that it otherwise might have been. Gin clear water. River pushing through.
Started in the bottom weir and moved upstream looking for the sort of even-paced runs that are usually stuffed full of Grayling on the Lugg at this time of year. In spite of finding plenty of likely looking candidates, it didn't really work out that way although, I picked up fish fairly consistently as I worked up river but, if memory serves, never more than one fish per run. I ended up with around a dozen Grayling - mostly in the 10-12 inch bracket - on Czech nymphs/PTNs/Copper Johns. Found a few fish rising, just above the Bridge mid-afternoon. Switched to a Klinkhammer for a couple of small Trout and a couple of even smaller Grayling before an early finish to beat the rain.
An interesting beat which, under better conditions, should really produce.

Tough going today, tried the obvious beats on the upper section with no joy then moved downstream to some of the newly cleared (to me anyway) swims and roved around for one barbel of 8.12, then headed back upstream at dusk for 2 more barbel and a chub plus one lost to a snag, once again pellet was the bait to catch on it seems.
