Very tricky conditions, sunny, low water and downstream wind. Had a 14" trout on a nymph, and a couple of smaller fish at last light. Spinner fall at 7:30pm, couldn't work out for the life of us what they were eating - quite frustrating! Some days you think that you have the game worked out, not today...

Very tough going throughout the middle of the day, sporadic hatches and rises. Came alive in the last 30 mins of light, nearly all fish on olive emerger patterns. Access along the bank is terrible and dangerous, but once in the river ok.

Arrived de bonne heure to find a higher and faster flowing river than I was expecting - rain in Welsh Wales or, more likely, water from the dams? Started on the bottom beat, with two Grayling on pretty much my first two casts cause for optimism; but I was not to touch another fish until the afternoon. It could have been the thing at the blunt end of the rod I suppose, but there was a nasty downstream wind, and the river was really pushing through at that stage
Top beat in the afternoon for a couple more Grayling and a run of Trout, before picking up four more Grayling PDQ from just below the Suspension Bridge (from a run I usually fish but, if memory swerves, I have never caught from before) just before calling it a day. Quality over quantity today; while the Trout were on the small side, the Grayling were mostly the sort of fish my old mate Tom Dixon would call "about a pound". Most of the fish on a tungsten Endrick Spider, with a couple of rising fish taking a Klinkhammer
A bit like Joe Alexander the other day, I was startled by a large Eel more of less swimming through my legs while I was waist deep in mid river. While I am fearless when it comes to Pike, there is something about Eels that un-nerves me, so much so that, for the rest of the day, I spent as much time looking down as looking up

Fished from 08:00-14:00. Three anglers fished today and split the water evenly.
Fishing was slower early on in the shaded sections (possibly now insect activity because of cooler temps). Took fish on dry and dropper rigs throughout the day (the odd double nymph when the water was deep enough).
Fish responded well to shuttle-cock style dries (emergers) and natural cdc collar nymphs. 2.5mm beads worked well.
Average size was about 18cm. Some larger fish (25-35cm) taken but no real brutes this time.

River was up slightly from lowest summer levels, slightly coloured. Quite warm and sunny most of the day with some cloud in the morning when most of the chub were caught. Chub caught on float fished meat at the top end in the rocky pool and immediately downstream in the faster water. Fished prebaited swims about half way along the beat in the afternoon. 3 swims produced nothing but the 4th produced an immediate bite and a welcome 5lb barbel from the fastest water. Had to leave early so will be back for those barbel.
