Thought I'd reacquaint myself with this beat after a long absence. Lovely bright winter day with snow on the ground and slippery. So, I decided not to fish but recce the beat. A few promising spots but much electric fencing and where there were access points there was also much vegetation along the bank side of the fence making further walking difficult. Had a good lunch at the Corners Inn, Kingsland. Grateful to the owners for a lovely spot.

The beauty of booking in advance! I did intend for a late season barbel session as temperatures seemed mild. Fast forward a few weeks and the "arctic blast" certainly had something to say about that. The river was up 5ft on arrival and slowly dropped as the day went on. This really is a beautiful stretch of the Wye and during the mornings snowstorm it looked magical. I opted to spend most of my time targeting pike close in at the bottom end of the stretch. A few hours were spent trying to tempt a barbel by giving different pegs 20 mins but to no avail. Late afternoon I started to get pestered by eels who shredded my Deadbait within 20 minutes of it entering the water and the one other was a small 1lb eel. It saved the blank.

Not the outcome I was after but the conditions were stacked against me. A very beautiful stretch that I'll certainly try again and hopefully I'll do better then!
