This nil return comes with a measure of sadness. I love this stretch of river, but it is now in a sorry state. Very low, slow and tinged with green by a thick fringe of algae. It was a cooler day and the water temperature was below 20c. We dutifully fished dry, but in the knowledge that any fish which came to the surface would probably be looking to give himself up. Mercifully, none did.
I should note that there were campers in the field by our stretch of the bank, presumably there with the farmer's permission. This lot didn't bother us, but the same might not be true of others.

River painfully low, air and water temperature down in recent weeks. Roved around mostly looking for faster water and on wading it was evident that faster water really shallow.
Absolutely nothing on feeder rod, thank god I took float rod! Caught first ever barbel on float and pin, so delighted with that.
What was interesting is as river so low I was able to see contours and depths of river which in normal or above conditions not really possible.

As usual I had a lovely day fishing at a beautiful location that is (Trecastle) reservoir, quite chilly but to compensate I caught 5 lovely rainbow trout ranging from 1lb. 8ozs to 2lb.10ozs lovely eating size, all in good condition my partner gathered a large bag of plastic litter which she took home and recycled so we both had a good day ????
Fishing Passport Note : Thank you Alan and your lovely partner for the clean up. Very much appreciated.

The weather forecast the day before indicated a cloudy start then sunshine for the rest of the day from mid morning. So the decision for an early start was made. Arrived around 8am to low cloud and damp conditions. Fishing was slightly delayed due to a puncture and the need to change the wheel (tuned out to be an expensive fishing trip as the tyre was not repairable). Fish were rising to flies fished on the surface but not easy to hook. A hand full of fish landed before lunch then back out in the afternoon with the cloud base higher but still no signs of the sun. Black terrestrial flies of various sizes where now being blown onto the water with the trout going mad for them. At times there was so many fish rising in front of us we didn't know which one to cast to first. Fishing black flies fished on or just under the surface we easily landed more than 20 fish each, with a couple being around the 1/2 pound size. As we packed away at 6:30pm the sun made its first appearance. Beautiful natural lake to fish and once again saw a hen harrier.
