Fished 8 - 5 and headed to CLG hoping to minimise the easterly and to block out some of the forecast unabated sunshine. Not sure if it worked or not, compared with the wider and more open reaches of the Wye but at least I did catch some fish. Some pale wateries mid-morning but not many later, and virtually no other fly life. Some leaves now filing the creases, so a few fish sipping here and there and others looking up, if not rising. Very few rising fish but, those which did and didn't, took a small HE emerger. On the bugs, most fish were taken in the faster water and necks. Grayling half and half, from 9-11 and 13-17 inches, the latter a lovely two pounder. Trout 10 - 13 inches. CLG looking as lovely as ever.

Fished Cadora Backs today with another guest salmon angler. Unsurprisingly given the conditions, we had a nil return. Some fish showing which may have been grilse but were probably large trout. Had a conversation with Nathan the Ghillie from the downstream beats which was interesting. There is little to attract fly only anglers to this beat under these conditions apart from Cadora pool. Canal like water in the rest of the beat but there was a better flow when I visited a few months ago.
Note to the owner. The rotting sheep carcass just above Cadora pool needs to be removed.

Only fished a short evening session from 4- 8-15, only barbel of 8lb 10oz at 7-30 one other hooked straight after but hook pulled out. Groundbait and pellet feeder with 14 mm pellet on hook, excellent fishery with plenty of swim choice and good access but the hill down to start of the fishery is a killer.

Lovely day though fishing was a struggle In the morning with only two grayling from down at the bottom of the beat. Fished back Up the river with nothing doing until a 15 minute spell had 3 grayling and a trout all above 18 inches. Then carried on up the beat with nothing else except a few half hearted rises.

About 6 I was faffing around trying to catch some tiddlers in the slow water at top of the beat, contemplating whether it was time to call it a day, when I was tipped off about rising fish back down the bottom so headed back down there. What followed was some of the best of fishing I can recall (in my relatively short time fishing the Wye).

In about 20 minutes I’d had 3 trout up to 17 inches and 2 grayling up to 12 inches as well as hooking and losing another 4. Fantastic!

All caught on various pattern of dry flies and returned safely. The beat is brilliant and well worth a visit at this time of year. Hopefully - weather and lockdown dependant - might be able to squeeze in another day before the year is out.

There was no report at the time of writing to find a name but the tip of fish rising came from the chap who fished the beat yesterday. Thank you very much!
