All catches came within a brief hour at 13:00 on the dry fly during a good hatch. River level very low and had a strong up stream wind to contend with. Missed a few other fish, likely grayling. Beautiful stretch of river Wye.

This is the first of two days' fishing on the Penpont beat, so what follows applies to both days. No fish, no rises, no takes - river was low and clear, wind was bitingly cold and from the East. I tried spiders and PTNs on 5 weight line and used the dry fly rod just to get some practice in. I imagine much finer tackle was needed, plus a much better angler than me to catch fish!

Wow, fantastic weather today !!! Looks decent all week in fairness....15 degrees maybe a tad more this afternoon, when I parked up by the bridge at 1145am. Insect on the go, s goof few large Darks, some March Brown's and even sedges seen about oneish !! The party of flying ravers certainly had the Edw trout looking up !!! Impressive stuff, stayed on ting dries all afternoon.
On this beat, I fished up to the bridge fish in thf fast stuff, nailing my dry!!! Superb sport, tis as if overnight we've jumped into mid May !!!
Fish between six and ten inches today, lovely confident takes on mh dry !!! Just love fishing my favourite small streams outfit, mh six foot , one weight fun fun , fun !!!
More skinned frogs seen and quite a few along the whole of the section I fished...looks like I may have just missed Tarka !!! Fresh prints everywhere !!@
Lovely two hour session, chilled out having my lunch at the bridge, decided with the day being do productive, I'd have a mooch up the road to Hergest !! We are in dire need of water to be honest !!
Packed kit in thd back of mh truck, onwards yo Hergest !!! A cracking little session fishing a single dry, on a favourite beat ....with seven or eight beauties to the net ....Happy days!!!

Bowled up at the Hergest pull in over the bridge ...Note to anglers : park right up away from the layby in the rough stuff !!! Farm wagons need that turning circle to drive off and to approach the narrow bridge .......
Arrived at this beat, had it to myself at just gone half two , carried on the motion, fishing dries in the fast stuff !! Dynamic sport, with aggressive confident hits ..... Again very low here, so making hay while it's still fishable..... lots of rain needed !!!
Dark olives and sedge on parade here .... Fish looking up, but , just like the Usk fish, they called ot time at half four !!! I didn't fish all this beat a couple of hundred yards short of the falls I think ......Otters prints present, and I wax pretty chuffed eithbthid section I'd done winter work on too !!! Some new pools are fun, there's also some that now have s huge ash tree in them....All adds variety , and refuge for young trout !!@ Actually lots of fry seen in fact masses .... in the slack stuff ....
A fantastic few hours on this beat too ....Nine brownies to my net ...sizes from six to maybe eleven inches....just the most fun ever!!
Packed up and ventured back across thf fields at quarter to five ...A lovely session , tis my absolute favourite technique, dry fly sport on the small stresms, sublime !!!! Right, this callsign is off for a bimble into Rhayader, and a cold scoop of the amber nectar ..... be rude not to hey, after a cracking day ...............

A warm and bright day with a nagging upstream wind made fishing challenging. The morning saw the best of the hatches with Grannom in evidence.
Fish were looking up and rose repeatedly to my flys, however so difficult to connect, perhaps they were coming short due to tough conditions. Persevered and had 2 to grannom imitations, beautiful day but still tough.

I saw middle Wye Grannom for the first time yesterday (early - it’s still March….just). So, with sun forecast but unable to fish the sunny Grannom hatch this morning, and with windy easterlies for the rest of the week, I decided to see if anyone was mopping up any cripples, or tail-end Charlies, for a couple of hours on the home patch here on The Red Lion waters this afternoon. Not surprisingly, as it was very still and 18 degrees (March!!!), I found some fish sipping and hoped that they would be trout. Sadly, they weren’t, but a 5 and 5.5lb chub proved that a Goran’s Sedge, tied with a Grannom body, still does the bizz. I left the rest of these out-of-season chub to just eat naturals but couldn’t find any trout. Still a few MBs on the water, mid to late afternoon. Hopefully, with the sun shining for the rest of the week to trigger the Grannom hatch, I'll find the trout tomorrow morning, before the wind really gets up?

Lovely sunny day. Fished dry fly only and caught five trout on buoyant sedge patterns (Goddard, Rat-faced McDougal). Managed to avoid falling in all weekend until trying to leave the river today when we both took an unplanned bath. Very pleased with the state of the Usk though after a couple of years away. So many thanks to all those involved in preserving it
