An early start in anticipation of Storm Ophelia and we were rewarded with four grayling plus others lost, one quite large. A strong downstream wind dictated a down and across approach with copper beaded nymphs until the wind got the better of us and we departed at 1pm.

We had been looking forward to this day as it was our first day on a Fishing Passport beat. Sadly we picked a day of a hurricane and the wind blew gale force all day straight down river. We stuck at it because we were there but really we were wasting our time. It hasn't put us off we will be back to try again another day.

Very windy conditions. Leaves bit of a problem. Couldn't quite get to end of beat because river just high enough to make it risky especially as had son with me. Fished just below bend son had 3 and me 1 . Wind picked up more so moved below hut were I had 3 more and lost 3 and my son lost 2. Son had his fish on pellets with groundbait feeder. I had 1 on pellets and others on boilies. Lovely stretch and will be back .

Choosing to fish on the day ex-hurricane Ophelia blew wasn't the best idea but nonetheless we had a great day on this lovely stretch of water. A stiff downstream breeze did make it difficult but we fished until mid-afternoon when the amount of branches etc. coming down meant we called it a day a bit earlier than we would of normally. All grayling were taken on the dry fly, amazing considering there were so many leaves on the surface that the grayling could hardly have seen the flies. Small out of season trout took nymphs. All fish returned. First time on the Colonel's Water, we will definitely be back. The Fishing Passport is an extremely efficient way of trying new waters.
