A sunny morning and warmer than it has been. I get the impression that the fish are barely out of Winter mode. Not much food in the drift and little bug life. There was a short window when bugs did start to come off - March browns I think - and one or two good fish did start rising, an opportunity I promptly messed up. The rise probably lasted no more than half an hour. I did manage two fish on a single nymph fished deep. Both were clonkers. The first was two and a half and fought hard and fast. The second was a tired old warrior of three and a half. I don’t know who was more shocked.

A great second day on the Usk. 20 plus trout on the dry jingler (15 foot tapered leader) fished in the streamy water. Hatch wasn’t as prolific as previous day but fish rose steadily from 11.30 to 3.30. Quite a few missed too!

Lovely day on this beat. The owner rang me the evening before for a friendly chat and a few tips. Day started frosty and sunny, on the water by 11.15. Big hatch of March browns started about 12 noon, a couple of fish rising along the beat. Had a lovely brownie of about 14” drifting 2 spiders, carefully returned. Nothing else for the rest of the day.

I've been meaning to fish this beat for a while, glad I did it's a wonderful place with some great fly water. No Salmon but I caught an escapee brook trout which had me going for a minute and baffled as it came to hand! Thanks the other rod Ben for his advice and I hope to return asap.

River rather low and very quiet. No fly and only a couple of rises observed in five hours of fishing. Just one 8” trout caught.
