Arrived at 0530 just as light was breaking, settled into
the woods Rocks swim and boshed in the usual
ground bait feeder of pellet mix that I know barbel
love. Well not this morning. Nothing doing at all. Gave it
4 hours and moved up to Legg Meadow with the same swim
feeder as I started with result.
First cast in swim 5 I think in Legg Meadow snagged and lost the feeder I had cast 20 times in the Rocks swim!
These fish in this stretch are under pressure there's no doubt about it, just look at the bookings it was only a matter of time until they got the hump. I gave it an hour or so then made tracks home for Sunday lunch. Waiting around all day for a seven pounder or two is madness. That is what seems to be happening of late. Try Wyebank before the winter temps set in, it's not been hammered like Courtfield.

This is a short beat but with good potential being so close to the fantastic and favourite Escley. Got off to a bad start with beat shortened by a quarter due to campsite on the beat edge and campers in the water! Morning didn't get much better and blanked.

Area:Irfon

Beat:The Cammarch Hotel Irfon

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:1

Lovely welcome from the Hotel as usual - cup of coffee, a natter about ridiculously large grayling that have been caught recently. Adrenaline levels are always high when approaching to fish this river, not just for the chance encounter with record grayling, but I get the feeling it could sweep you away with one wrong step, even with just a few inches over normal height.
So, fished the bottom half of the beat without connecting to anything. A few good fish were rising but I couldn't fool them. Once at the flats my confidence grew, and indeed I caught several brown trout including a whopper that until it jumped had me fooled into thinking it was the biggest grayling in Wales! Grayling were rising in several pockets, but again I failed to fool them so went home pretty disappointed - I will return though.

First time to this beat, easy to find and good parking close to river. Warm and sunny with low water so no salmon however 1 large brown trout around the 3lb mark and several smaller before lunch and then a salmon sized (well almost) grayling around 3pm. Again around the 3lb mark maybe larger. Smaller trout and grayling came to drys all afternoon. All released in good condition.
Lovely well looked after beat will be back for trout, salmon and monster grayling. Many thanks to beat owner and WUF.

Fished courtfield from 10am to 11pm. I W had 3 barbel between 5 & 8lb 2oz & 1 chub 4.5lb. All fish caught between 5 and 11 pm from Wood crib on meat and pellets. B H had 1 chub and a lovely river wye 10lb barbel. All fish caught on meat from Legg Meadow crib. Here's a nursery rhythm to remember when fishing courtfield, "if you go down in the woods today never mind the disguise it's terminal tackle you need". The place eats you alive but canoers can come in handy. Nice to speak to Don the owner as always. Check out the website Lower Wye Fishery, Wyebank and Courtfield.

Beat:Middle Ballingham & Fownhope No.8

Arrived with my friend at 7am and fished till 6pm. We tried halibut pellets, spice pellets, luncheon meat. We didn't catch any barbel. I caught just 1 chub. The hill is steep, but not very long and we didn't have any problem with that.
There is not much space for fishing. I would say just first 200 meters and even that is not good. I will never go back to this part of the river. I think you should not charge £15 but maybe £5 per day. My plan was, if we don't catch any barbel in few hours, we will move further, but where?!!Not happy with this.
At 5pm came two I think Polish speaking men. At 6pm came another two. I asked them if they going to fish over night. They said Yes. I think they were poachers. Because if there is no night fishing, why would they fished over night? Also they had cans of beers with them.

Very straightforward booking process. I didn't arrive at the beat until half past four.
By the time I had walked the beat (avoiding a family of picnickers and swimmers) and decided that the inviting looking Corner Pool was unsafe to wade far enough out due to the height of the water and the uneven bedrock and boulder combination footing. I didn't start fishing the Lower Flats until almost six. I did enjoy this very beautiful and interesting beat though. Inspite of abundant hatches of various Olives and Sedge I was surprised by the lack of rising fish in the evening. I only managed to land one wbt of about 3/4 of a pound, caught on a quill body Olive dun imitation.
Thanks very much for a very pleasant evening's fishing, I'll be back next year.
