I tried the bottom of the wood beat to begin with but found it still pushing through too fast for comfort and after an hour and only one 3lb Chub I moved up to the first swim in Legg Meadow. After a couple more Chub, the Barbel moved in and I finished with nine of them to 7lb 13ozs all caught on Elips pellets.

Cold until lunchtime with strong gusty winds and sharp showers, more like April than July. The water was somewhat coloured. I fished from 10am - 3pm and only caught 3/4 small fish 6 inches. Very few rises seen during this time although I did see a few mayfly!

Very nearly didn't bother when I initially saw the state of the river; high and coloured like a strong builders brew. Having travelled hundereds of miles I decided to stick it out and was rewarded with about 20 nice brownies up to 1lb in horrible and difficult conditions. All on heavy nymphs, not a single fish rose. The river here is deep and unwadable in parts. An interesting beat but I'm not sure it justifies a hefty price tag, nor the claim that the average fish is 1lb!!

On a seperate note I witnessed a nasty mink on the far bank decimating the nest of Sand Martins. It killed three chicks in 1 hour! Also saw a guy on the far bank with a spinning rod who looked as though he was about to start fishing until he saw me.

A day when sitting it out in one swim seemed to work better than roving. The 2 rods who sat it out landed 3 barbel each, late in the day (5-7.5lbs). The 2 rovers managed one barbel between us - but 17 chub! River remained coloured all day though still dropping. However, the inclement weather meant the beat was much quieter than it generally is on a Sunday.

Fished a swollen and coloured river that had a steady flow to it even close in. Started the day with lots of small taps that resulted in a couple of Eels. eventually fish found groundbait and we ended up with 8 barbel and 3 chub. Another great day on a typically scenic section of the Wye. Thanks WUF.

13lb fresh fish caught at 7.40am
Nyth and Tyr Celyn total for June is 9.

Thank you for respecting my wish not to have my name listed for any catches. Fishing to me is a very personal connection with the natural world and the last thing I seek is personal attention / publicity for my catches. I just think your reports encourage others to believe that they might catch something!

The river looked to be absolutely perfect in height and colour. But what do I know? Not a sign of a fish anywhere. My quest for a Wye salmon continues.
