Very weedy and very busy with river traffic being Sunday. The only place to get some consistent fishing was the far channel on the island swim. Two small chublets on the float. Will be back though

The river, as we all know is incredibly low but after walking this stretch we found some nice, fast moving swims around three feet deep which looked very fishy. Unfortunately the weed is really bad and every cast returned with green weed all over the bait. Once the sun got a bit higher I walked the full stretch with my Polaroids on and never saw one fish even though I could see the bottom pretty much all the way across. Gave it until around 10.30am and gave up. Pretty place but no fish Unfortunately.

3 Grayling caught on nymphs, all from below the bridge. Biggest about 14". Rose a few trout, but did not land any.
Very blustery wind, which stopped any hatches.

The beat is VAST! There was a lot of algae making things quite slippery underfoot. River is in pretty good condition and gin clear in the shallower sections. Access to the river itself is generally ok although caution should be taken as sone of the banks are slightly steep but easily doable if done slowly.
Saw three pretty decent sized fish when I first arrived but sadly everything I offered wasn’t even sniffed at! The insect life wasn’t as abundant as I expected and very little rising. I left just after 7pm.

Three trout between 10 and 14.5", all on small Grey Dusters during a pale watery hatch. Had a few other bites but it was very tough for long periods - the odd rise in the slow glides to a few caddis and a large mayfly - I think autumn dun? - but those insects were quite sparse so hardly any repeat risers and they were very hard to tempt until those little mayflies got going. Nothing on nymphs - did try that too in the slower periods, although there are some nice glides and riffles here between the long flatter sections. Did nearly hook a large chub on a wasp imitation (Jasper) but struck a fraction too soon/got unlucky - there are some nice ones here. Nice to see a bit of rain finally for the Usk, the level rose a bit and it seemed to dislodge quite a lot of algae - and there was a lot more in the shallows - but the water stayed nice and clear. It's a beautiful part of the Usk, I thoroughly enjoyed it - thanks for booking and to the beat owners for letting me fish it!
